๐ THE UPWARD GAZE: AWAKENING HIGHER CONSCIOUSNESS
A Story of Discovery, Neuroscience, and the Ancient Secret of Elevating Awareness
There are practices that look simple… and then there are practices that open a doorway.
For me, the discovery of the Upward Gaze was one of those doorway moments — a moment that changed how I understood consciousness, meditation, and the human mind.
It happened during a Heart–Mind Yoga session many years ago. A young man sat in front of me, struggling with a restless mind. He had tried everything — breathing, chanting, posture, silence — but his thoughts kept running like a river in flood.
I looked at him and said gently:
“Lift your eyeballs upward… and keep them there.”
He hesitated. He tried. And then… something extraordinary happened.
His breath softened. His shoulders relaxed. His face became calm. His mind — which had been racing for years — suddenly became still.
He opened his eyes slowly and whispered:
“What just happened? I feel like I entered a different space inside me.”
That day, I witnessed a truth that ancient yogis knew, that modern neuroscience is beginning to understand, and that Heart–Mind Yoga now teaches to thousands:
The direction of your gaze changes the state of your consciousness.
๐ The Ancient Secret: Why Yogis Look Upward
For centuries, yogic masters — including the lineage of Mahaavatar Babaji — taught the upward gaze as a gateway to higher awareness.
They knew something profound:
When the eyes lift upward, the mind follows.
The upward gaze redirects awareness from:
the lower mind → to the higher mind
the emotional brain → to the intuitive brain
the restless state → to the Beautiful State
It is a physical movement that creates a spiritual shift.
๐ง The Neuroscience Behind the Upward Gaze
Modern science now confirms what ancient yogis practiced intuitively.
1. Activates the Prefrontal Cortex
The upward gaze stimulates the brain’s higher centers — responsible for clarity, intuition, decision‑making, and calmness.
2. Reduces Activity in the Amygdala
The emotional fear center quiets down, reducing anxiety and emotional reactivity.
3. Breaks the Loop of Overthinking
Looking up interrupts repetitive thought patterns and resets mental circuits.
4. Triggers Alpha and Theta Brainwaves
These are the brainwaves of meditation, creativity, and expanded awareness.
5. Creates Instant Stillness
The mind cannot remain chaotic when the gaze is lifted — it naturally shifts into a higher state.
This is not magic. This is neurophysiology responding to consciousness.
๐ The Spiritual Dimension: Opening the Inner Sky
In Heart–Mind Yoga, we teach that the upward gaze opens the inner sky.
When the eyeballs lift:
thoughts rise and dissolve
emotions soften
prฤแนa flows upward
awareness expands
the heart opens
the mind becomes vast
It is as if the inner world shifts from a crowded room to an open sky.
This is why we say:
“Lift your eyes… and the sky opens within you.”
๐ฟ A Story of Transformation Through the Upward Gaze
A woman once came to me with deep emotional heaviness. She felt stuck — mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Her mind was constantly pulling her downward.
I taught her the upward gaze.
She practiced daily — just a few minutes.
After a week, she said:
“I don’t know how to explain it… but I feel like my mind is no longer pulling me down. It’s lifting me up.”
Her face looked brighter. Her voice sounded lighter. Her presence felt expanded.
She had discovered the power of the upward gaze — the power to rise above the lower mind and enter the Beautiful State.
✨ Why the Upward Gaze Is Revolutionary
Because it solves a problem millions struggle with:
How do I stop my mind from pulling me down?
The upward gaze:
quiets the mind
lifts consciousness
awakens intuition
deepens meditation
expands awareness
opens the heart
dissolves emotional heaviness
prepares the practitioner for the Beautiful State
It is simple. It is powerful. It is ancient. It is scientific. It is transformational.
And it works for everyone.
๐ How to Practice the Upward Gaze
Sit comfortably. Relax your breath. Close your eyes gently. Now lift your eyeballs upward — as if looking at the sky inside your forehead.
Not straining. Not forcing. Just gently lifting.
Hold the gaze. Let the breath soften. Let the mind rise.
Within seconds, you will feel:
stillness
lightness
clarity
expansion
peace
This is higher consciousness. This is the Beautiful State.
๐ฉ A Gentle Invitation
If you are reading this, something inside you is ready.
Ready to rise. Ready to awaken. Ready to expand. Ready to enter the Beautiful State.
The upward gaze is simple. It is powerful. It is universal. It is for everyone.
