Breath: The Silent Power That Transforms Your Body, Mind & Life
A personal story by Raj Kumar Dham
I did not discover the power of breath in a yoga class or a medical book. I discovered it in life — in animals, in patients, in people struggling with stress, and even in myself.
Breathing is so automatic that most people never think about it. It goes on… silently… without asking for attention. Life begins with a breath and ends with a breath — and yet, in between these two, we rarely understand how deeply breath controls our physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual state.
My journey into breath began with a simple curiosity: Why do different beings breathe differently — and why do humans lose their natural breathing pattern?
That question changed my life.
Where My Breath Journey Began
I have always been fascinated by human behaviour — why people think the way they do, why they react the way they do, why they suffer even when they don’t want to.
But one day, I started observing something even more fundamental:
Breathing patterns.
I noticed that animals breathe in a very specific way. Each species has its own rhythm, its own pace, its own pattern.
A cow breathes differently from a dog. A rabbit breathes differently from a horse. A bird breathes differently from a human.
And I saw something remarkable:
There is a relationship between breathing and lifespan.
Animals with slow, deep breathing live longer. Animals with fast, shallow breathing live shorter.
This made me wonder:
What about humans? Do we have a natural breathing pattern? And if yes, why do we lose it?
The Human Breathing Mystery
Humans are born with a natural breathing rhythm — slow, deep, relaxed. Watch a baby sleeping. The breath moves gently in the stomach. The chest is soft. The face is peaceful.
But as we grow, something changes.
Stress changes our breath. Fear changes our breath. Anger changes our breath. Anxiety changes our breath. Ambition changes our breath. Even our thinking changes our breath.
I began observing people:
People with stress breathed fast and shallow.
People with anxiety breathed irregularly.
People with anger breathed sharply.
People with sadness breathed slowly but constricted.
People with happiness breathed freely.
Breath was not just air. Breath was a state.
And then came the most important question:
If breathing changes with our state… can our state change with breathing?
The answer was yes.
The Turning Point: My Healing Work
In my healing sessions — whether in villages, my ATAMABODH Centre, or with patients — I began experimenting with breath.
I asked people to slow their breath. I asked them to deepen their breath. I asked them to observe their breath. I asked them to breathe consciously.
And I saw transformation.
People became calmer. People became clearer. People became emotionally lighter. People became mentally stronger. People became spiritually open.
Breath was not just supporting life. Breath was shaping life.
The Hospital Experiences That Changed Me
In 2015, when I got the opportunity to take sessions for oncology patients, I noticed something immediately:
Their breathing was disturbed. Completely disturbed.
Fast. Shallow. Uneven. Constricted.
Their bodies were fighting. Their minds were struggling. Their emotions were heavy.
I began teaching them simple breathing practices.
Slowly… gently… patiently.
And I saw something unforgettable:
Their faces softened
Their fear reduced
Their pain eased
Their sleep improved
Their energy increased
Their hope awakened
Breath became their medicine.
Later, with heart patients, I saw the same thing. With stress patients, the same. With anxiety patients, the same.
Breath was the missing link.
The Science Behind Breath
Modern science now confirms what ancient wisdom always knew:
1. Breath controls the nervous system
Slow breathing activates the parasympathetic system — the healing system. Fast breathing activates the sympathetic system — the stress system.
2. Breath changes brain chemistry
Deep breathing increases serotonin, dopamine, and GABA — calming chemicals. Shallow breathing increases cortisol — the stress hormone.
3. Breath influences emotions
Your emotional state is directly linked to your breathing pattern.
4. Breath affects the heart
Slow breathing improves heart rate variability — a key marker of health.
5. Breath shapes consciousness
Breath is the bridge between body, mind, and awareness.
Breath is not just physiology. Breath is intelligence.
My Realization
After years of observing people, animals, patients, and my own inner world, I realized:
Breathing is the most powerful tool for transformation — because it is the only function that is both automatic and voluntary.
You don’t have to learn breathing. You only have to remember breathing.
And once you reconnect with your natural breathing pattern, your entire life begins to shift.
The Breath Practices That Changed Lives
Here are the simple practices I taught — the same ones that helped thousands:
1. The 4‑Second Calm Breath
Inhale for count of 4 Exhale for count of 4 Repeat 10 times
Instant calm.
2. The Belly Breath (Baby Breath)
Place your hand on your stomach Breathe so your stomach rises Not your chest. breathing in stomach rise and breathing out it goes down
This reconnects you to your natural rhythm.
3. The Emotional Reset Breath
When angry, stressed, or anxious: Exhale longer than you inhale Example: Inhale 4, exhale 6
This dissolves emotional charge.
4. The Healing Breath (Oncology Method)
Slow inhale Slow exhale Smile gently Repeat 5 times
This activates inner intelligence.
5. The Beautiful State Breath
Breathe slowly Feel (observe) the breath-inhalation and exhalation Allow silence Let awareness expand
This brings you into the Beautiful State.
A Final Word From My Heart
Breath is not small. Breath is not mechanical. Breath is not ordinary.
Breath is your life. Breath is your state. Breath is your intelligence. Breath is your healing. Breath is your transformation.
If you want to change your life, start with your breath.
Slow it. Deepen it. Observe it. Respect it. Return to it.
Your breath will take you home — to your calm, your clarity, your joy, your Beautiful State.
