The Smile Habit: A 30‑Day Journey Into Joy, Healing & Inner Transformation
A personal story by Raj Kumar Dham
I never imagined that one of the most powerful healing tools I would discover in my life would be something so simple, so natural, so universal… a smile.
Not a perfect smile. Not a joyful smile. Not even a real smile.
Just… a smile.
And this discovery did not come from books, research papers, or spiritual teachings. It came from the faces of people who had forgotten how to smile — patients fighting cancer, mothers carrying silent pain, students drowning in stress, and even visitors at my ATAMABODH Centre who walked in with heavy hearts.
One day, a patient looked at me and said, “Sir, can you teach us something simple… something that can help us quickly?”
That request became the beginning of The Smile Habit — a 30‑day journey that has transformed lives across the world.
Where My Smile Journey Truly Began
Long before I started teaching the Beautiful State, I was searching for ways to help people shift their inner state quickly.
I noticed something strange:
People wanted to change their habits, emotions, and reactions… but they couldn’t.
They tried meditation. They tried discipline. They tried motivation. But their inner state remained disturbed.
And then, one day, I saw something so simple that it shocked me:
Smiling changed people instantly.
Their faces softened. Their eyes brightened. Their energy shifted.
It was as if smiling awakened a sleeping intelligence inside them.
The Worldwide Smile Experiment
I began telling people:
“Just smile. Don’t worry if it is real or artificial. Just start smiling.”
Some laughed at me. Some resisted. Some said, “Artificial smile won’t help.”
But I insisted:
“Keep smiling. It will become real. Your brain will produce happiness hormones.”
Slowly, people began reporting:
“My mood is improving.”
“My stress is reducing.”
“I feel lighter.”
“My face looks brighter.”
“I am smiling more naturally now.”
This was not motivation. This was not discipline. This was not effort.
This was inner transformation.
Smiling was rewiring their brain.
Smiling as a Habit: ATAMABODH Centre
At my ATAMABODH Yoga Centre, I made a simple rule:
The moment you enter, start smiling. And keep smiling till you leave.
People thought it was funny. Some felt shy. Some resisted.
But within days, everything changed.
The centre felt alive. Faces glowed. Energy shifted. People connected.
Smiling became a habit.
And habits change lives.
The Night Ritual That Surprised Me
I told people:
“Before sleeping, check your smiling percentage. 10%? 20%? 30%?”
I was shocked when people came back saying:
“Sir, my smiling percentage is increasing.”
This was not a technique. This was not a trick. This was not psychology.
This was inner intelligence awakening.
The Oncology Sessions: A Turning Point
In 2015, I got the opportunity to take sessions for oncology patients.
These were people fighting cancer. People carrying pain, fear, uncertainty. People whose faces had forgotten what a smile looked like.
I noticed something immediately:
Smiling was missing. Completely missing.
I decided to try something bold.
I stood in front of each patient. I asked them to clap. Then I asked them to smile.
Some resisted. Some hesitated. Some tried. Some couldn’t.
But I stood there… waiting… encouraging… till they smiled.
And the moment they smiled, I saw something unforgettable:
Their faces began to shine. Their eyes lit up. Their energy shifted. Their pain softened.
It was as if the smile awakened a sleeping intelligence inside them.
Requests From Readers & Patients
After these experiences, people began writing to me:
“Sir, please teach us smiling.” “Can you create a program?” “Can you guide us step by step?” “Can you help us make smiling a habit?”
Patients, students, readers — all asked for the same thing.
And that is how The Smile Habit: A 30‑Day Journey was born.
